Road Safety

JRSO’s are an important link between the road safety team at the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership and our school. As a JRSO, our job is to help everyone in our school learn more about, and understand the importance of road safety. We wear special badges to help you identify us, so you can come and talk to us about road safety!

Next time you are in school, have a look at our road safety notice board in the main corridor, which has lots of posters and information about staying safe on and near our roads!

Walking to School

We are very grateful and thankful to all the families who are really trying hard to reduce the use of cars as their transport coming to school. We know this will help us in many ways. We know there are times when coming in the car is necessary but we ask families to consider park and stride from the village hall whenever possible. It would be great to see our bike and scooter shelters overflowing each day.

If you could challenge yourself as a family to try to walk, scoot, ride or park and stride even for one day a week, small differences all add up to have a bigger impact.

JRSO

This week we held our first assembly about being a safe pedestrian. We introduced our first competition too.

For Class 1 and 2 they have a colouring competition to create a bright picture about being safe.

For Class 3 and 4 they need to create a poster about being a safe pedestrian which we could use around school.

All entries need to be in by Friday 2nd Decemeber.

The Big Pedal 2021

Sustrans Big Pedal inspires pupils, staff and parents to be amazing and take active journeys to school.

On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can get the highest percentage of their pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking, wheeling or scooting to school. Your school’s best five days will determine your final position, but you can log journeys on all ten days if you wish.

How many active journeys will your pupils and their parents and guardians make?

Why not 'Park & Stride' to school?

Swinderby All Saints Primary School operates a 'Park & Stride' scheme , working with Swinderby Village Hall and LCC Sustainable Travel Officers.

At drop off and pick up times parents are encouraged to park at Swinderby Village Hall and walk to school, reducing congestion around the school area and helping to keep our pupils safe.

Bikeability

Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling.

There are three Bikeability levels, each designed to improve cycling skills, no matter what is known already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees from the basics of balance and control, all the way to planning and making an independent journey on busier roads.

This course is designed to ensure the children can not only ride their bike but ride them safely.  On the first morning, the children are taught how to make safety checks on their bikes and helmets to make sure they are safe to use.  They ride on the playground to practise skills such as 'lifesaving looks', sharing the road, and emergency stops.

The children then practise on the road, doing U-turns, starting and stopping safely and overtaking parked vehicles.

It is presented by trained staff from the Lincolnshire Bikeability team and is delivered to Year 5 pupils (and any new Year 6’s who haven’t been trained) during the spring or summer of the year. Parents and guardians will be sent information a few weeks before commencement about the programme and are asked to sign up for this programme to learn a real life skill.

If you want to find out more about the programme please visit the Bikeability website.
