Class 1 - Miss Walker

25/26

Welcome to our classroom!

Here in Sunshine class we love to have fun when engaging in our learning, all whilst keeping high expectations.

We explore learning using all of our senses and as staff we encourage the children to understand how they learn best and share our learning with our friends using a mixture of our inside classroom as well as taking the learning outside when we can!

Summer Term

Our PE Days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

This term in Year 2 English we will be writing our own ‘Just so stories’ and using lots of imagination in our writing. We will also be writing letters to our new teacher in September. Year 1 children will have lots of writing opportunities within their provision challenges to build on their topic learning as well as writing a range of text types that link to their phonics group books. EYFS have been building on their writing skills within the provision and their phonics group sessions and will continue to build on their handwriting skills.

As part of our Maths lessons, we will be learning how to tell the time on a clock as well as learning lots of different measurement skills like length, height, mass and capacity. Remember, if there are areas of Maths you would like to work on you can use the White Rose Home Learning videos.  Maths home learning | Home learning | White Rose Education

In our topics lessons we are focusing on Magnificent Monarchs. We will be delving into a selection of British Kings and Queens and seeing what impacts they have made. In Art we are using our knowledge from History lessons to understand the importance of royal paintings and creating our own portrait paintings in the style.

In Science we have been looking at animal survival and exploring habitats. In the last half term we will be looking at life cycles and growing our own butterflies!

Remember we need our reading books in school every day as we will have lots of opportunities to read for pleasure this term or read with an adult as we have different people coming in to help. We are reading ‘The Giraffe, the pelly and me’ in our Reading lessons and as a class we have voted to read The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton.

Sewing!

During the first half of the Summer term we did some sewing!

As part of our Cut, Stitch and Join topic in Design and Technology. Through the half term we practiced joining different materials in different ways, then we got to look at a fabric designer 'Cath Kidston' and explore her designs. Finally, we designed our own bag tags using a template which we used to cut out the fabric, then we used a running stitch to join the pieces together!

We had a brilliant time!

Reading in Key Stage 1!

We love to share books in EYFS/KS1. Throughout the year we read many picture based story books and each day the children vote for which book they would like to hear an adult read to them.

We also have half-termly reading for pleasure afternoons where we all drop what we are doing to enjoy getting cozy with a book, our parents/carers get to come and join in with this special time too.

During the Summer terms we begin to introduce chapter books such as Esio Trot, The Owl who was afraid of the dark and The Faraway Tree, to encourage children to build up their interest in longer stories and think about where the story will go next!

Read Write Inc. Phonics

At Swinderby All Saints we use Read Write Inc. Phonics to support our children's reading and writing.

This scheme has been proven to get children reading across schools and works well with our children.

Trip to Skegness Aquarium!

In the Spring term our geography topice was 'Coastline' we got to explore the past and present of local coastlines, maps and what we might find in coastal towns as well as understanding the importance of looking after our coastline and the damage that could happen in the future if we don't stop and think about it now!

To conclude our topic and summarise all of our learning we took a trip to Skegness Aquarium to see lots of the wildlife that live in our oceans! We spent lots of time surrounded by the fish and sharks, thinking about ways we can help them to thrive and continue to grow. We also got to develop some of our life skills in the gift shop by choosing what we wanted, counting out our money and paying independently!
