Welcome to our class!
Autumn Term 1 - Me and My Community/Exploring Autumn
In the Me and My Community project, we will be learning about the school community and building friendships.
We will explore the school grounds and find out about all the people in school who are there to help us.
In addition we weill be exploring how we are special and unique and how everyone’s family is different.
Within this topic, there will be many opportunities to take part in practical activities to support the building of new friendships and to explore what makes a good friend.
We will also spend time finding out about people in the community who help us, including doctors, nurses, and the emergency services.
The partner project to Me and My community is Exploring Autumn.
In the Exploring Autumn project, we will go on a woodland walk to learn about the seasonal changes that happen in autumn.
Alongside this we will be learning about birds and animals that live in the woods and how they survive as the weather gets colder.
We will also have chance to take part in practical and creative activities that will support us to learn about autumn

Obstacle course
The children built an obstacle course and practiced their balancing skills.
RWI Phonics
We start phonics in September, learning new sounds and how to piece these together to understand and read words.
Campfire
We created a cozy campfire to keep warm and to read books around.
Autumn Term 2 - Once Upon a Time/Sparkle and Shine
This term we are looking at Fairytales and Traditional Tales. This project supports children to develop a love of stories and reading. It encourages children to learn, retell and act out familiar and traditional tales including Cinderella, Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
In the Sparkle and Shine project, we will be looking at festivals and celebrations, for example, Bonfire Night, Diwali, and Hannuka amongst others.

Goldilocks Porridge
Following the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the children made their own porridge and tasted it with different toppings.
Fairytale towers
Following the story of Rapunzel, the children used different materials to build tall towers.
Sparkle creations
The children used their understanding of celebrations to create beautiful sparkly creations.
Spring Term 1 - Starry Skies and Winter Wonderland
This term our new topic will be Starry Night, with a partner project Winter Wonderland.
We will be exploring the differences in the world at night compared to during the day and will be finding out about the importance of a good night’s sleep. In addition, we will look at changes that happen during winter, including the types of weather associated with winter. We will also explore places that have snow all year round and the types of animals that live there too.

Shadows
Whilst looking at the starry skies, we were also able to begin exploring shadow-making.
We used nocturnal animals to create shadows with torches.
Whatever Next!
During this term, we looked at space and focused on the story Whatever Next by Jill Murphy.
We loved this story and were able to retell it and use some interesting vocabulary, too.
Winter Wonderland
We went out to explore the season of winter to see what we could spot from our learning. We had so much fun together.
Spring Term 2 - Dangerous Dinosaurs and Puddles and Rainbows
This term our topic will be Dangerous Dinosaurs, with a partner project Puddles and Rainbows.
In the Dangerous Dinosaurs project, we will be finding out about prehistoric animals that lived on Earth and discovering which ones have modern-day relatives. We will learn facts about dinosaurs and discover how big some of these giant creatures were as well as learning about the difference between carnivores and herbivores.
Supporting your child at home
- Go onto the Natural History Museum website and look at interesting facts about dinosaurs together.
- Go to the CBeebies Dinosaurs website and explore the games and videos together.
- Look up interesting dinosaur facts to share with the class.
In the Puddles and Rainbows project, we will be learning about the weather associated with the season of spring. We will explore natural phenomena, including rainbows, clouds, rain and wind, the colours found in the natural environment and will learn how to mix primary colours to make new colours.
Supporting your child at home
- Walk in your local environment and talk about the changes that have happened since winter.
- Go on a colour hunt and find objects for all the colours of a rainbow.
- Watch the weather forecast together and make a note of the different weather through the week.
- Go outside on a rainy day and find puddles to jump in.

Dinosaur creations
We used all of our knowledge of dinosaurs from the term to work as a team and create our own dinosaurs with all of our favourite parts.
Colour Monster!
We listened to The Colour Monster by Rachel Bright and explored the different feelings.
We matched different actions to how they would make us feel.
Volcano Explosion!
We learned about volcanoes and how they can erupt, then we experimented by creating our own volcano for our dinosaur world.
Summer Term 1 - Sunshine and Sunflowers and Shadows and Reflections
This term our topic will be Sunshine and Sunflowers, with a partner project Shadows and Reflections.
In the Sunshine and Sunflowers project we will be exploring the local environment and seeing how it has changed throughout the year. We will be growing flowers, fruit and vegetables in the garden area and will be learning how to care for plants and animals, identifying some different types. In addition, we will be taking part in outdoor learning activities and finding out how to stay safe in the sun.
Supporting your child at home
- Grow some quick growing plants together, such as salad leaves, radishes or cress.
- Plan and go on a picnic.
- Go on a local walk and talk about the changes that have happened to living things throughout the year
In the Shadows and Reflections project your child will learn about natural phenomena, including shadows, reflections and echoes. They will find out how shadows are formed and how they change shape and size through the day. They will explore how different materials and surfaces reflect light.
Supporting your child at home
- Find objects from around the house in which you can see your reflection.
- Draw around shadows outside and see how the shape and size of the shadow changes through the day.
- Explore places to hear echoes, such as in tunnels, under bridges and in large open-plan room
Summer Term 2 - Big Wide World and Splash
In the Big Wide World project, we will be finding out about the world we live in. We will learn about different climates and explore habitats, including their flora and fauna. We will spend time looking at maps of the world and will be comparing life in the United Kingdom with life elsewhere. We will also find out about caring for our environment, both locally and beyond.
Supporting your child at home
- Use Google Earth to explore where you live and look up places you would like to visit.
- Talk about places around the world you have visited, or places that family members or friends live. Look at the places on a map and talk about ways to travel.
- If you go on holiday, send a postcard to school to show where you went.
In the Splash! project, we will explore water play and learn about the different forms and bodies of water. We will investigate freezing and melting as well as floating, sinking and capacity.
Supporting your child at home
- Talk about how you use water at home and why it is important to drink water throughout the day.
- Find out about animals that live in water.
- Have fun playing with water in the bath, a paddling pool or swimming pool.
